Swanage has seen a renaissance in artisan businesses and shops in the town, including Java Independent Coffee shop which is opposite the shop.
Located in a cute courtyard, Lucy Tidbury has recently developed a unique brand around her "moo selfie" range. This fun and smile provoking style depict a down apparently taking a selfie in front of a famous local landmark. One of Lucy's early work was the Moo at Corfe prints, mugs, tea towels and the ever popular greeting cards.

Caroline is a Textile Artist based in Dorset and you can really see how the beautiful landscape around inspires her work. There's something really captivating about every one of Carolines art works and each one is completely unique.
I'm not quite sure how she does it though, as well as exhibiting her work at lots of local arts and craft fairs she also supplies a lot of local shops with her work including the visitor centre at Hengistbury Head, Butterfly Bright in Sherborne and even over in Guernsey at Shabby Chic.
It's been a week since the 1st Steeple Leaze Farm Christmas fair and I am finally getting to put a few words on the blog about the event. In short, it was a fantastic day and exceeded our expectations. We came up with the idea a few months ago, Julian the farmer had built a lovely new barn and Christmas is the only time of the year that it is empty, the rest of the year it would be full of sheep, birthing in the spring and shearing in the summer. We got permission from Julian and started putting the plans together. Lucy was in charge of getting interest from the local stall holders and I was in charge of advertising the event and sorting out the bar and BBQ not a bad job at all. We wanted to make the event something people would travel too as we are located a little out of the way, so I contacted my good friend Mark Dawson, who is a fantastic piano player and vocalist. Luckily he was playing at Mr Kyps the night before and agreed to come along and play for us in 2 x 2 hour sets.

Next on the list was to organise the "Hay Bale Inn". We needed somewhere for people to lounge around and enjoy the atmosphere, the problem was that farmers do not make hay bales anymore, they tend to produce the large rolls of hay which are much more efficient. This is where local farmer and friend Dave Randal came to the rescue, delivering us 30 bales of hay.

My final tasks were to get the BBQ and bar sorted, for the bar I was a bit late to get a barrel of ale from the Corfe Brewery, but luckily Steve was able to get various bottles for me but I don't think people were complaining about the barrel of Ringwood we had on tap. I obtained a lamb from Julian and a venison from Ashley Barns and took them to Curtis's the butchers in Wareham, who produced the most amazing venison and cranberry sausages and Lamb and Mint burgers which were to die for! I would like to mention that Curtis's were absolutely fantastic, preparing the meat and storing in there cold stores until the day, such a professional and nice bunch of guys. So I was set and nothing could ruin the day apart from the rain!

Well the rain happened which was always a risk for an event in November, but we were all dry inside the barn whilst outside the rain kept a steady drizzle. This undoubtedly would have put some off and I worried a bit about the parking as our overflow car park was a squelchy mess.

Not daunted I started the BBQ, heated the mulled wine and Marky started a few tunes. My friend Tony put on a dodgy Santa suit and prepared himself to scare off the punters at the door! A steady flow of guests soon turned into a flow and the BBQ got busy as Dave and my son Jake helped by taking money and shouting orders. I didn't get to chat to many of the stall holders but Lucy went round with the camera taking photo's of everyone. Her sisters had come along as well as her mum who had spent the previous day ensuring the farm campsite toilets were nice and clean, not a pleasant task by all accounts and a particular thank you to her! Hannah, our next door neighbor setup her stall for her first ever show, displaying her sewing skills in the form of bags and other accessories. Her husband, Matt, had ensured the barn was cleared out and a new layer of hay was on the floor to give the place some real atmosphere, this was also essential for the farm alpaca's who moaned all day as they had been rounded up out of their cozy field.

The day was a fantastic success, all our stall holders reported they had done well and we thank every one of them for coming along, they are all listed below. With 200 guests coming through the barn door, we could not have hoped for a better 1st show!.
Obviously I enjoy painting every commission but this was a particular favourite!

This oil on canvas painting is about A2 size so definitely makes a statement, but think it really captures Paddy's cheeky character.

I was lucky enough to meet Paddy at Woofstock and although it may sound odd it definitely helps me when I'm doing the painting.

By meeting the dog even briefly you can get to know their personality better which really helps when it comes to the painting and as all dog owners out there will agree every dog is completely unique in their own way, so if I can capture some of that character and personality in the painting that's what makes it a success.

Well that's enough blogging for me today I'm off to paint a horse, another great Christmas commission!
Finding two guys weilding chainsaws on a misty night near Blandford is a pretty nice tale for Halloween! Enjoy!

Driving past Blandford on a misty, miserable and dusky night I was drawn to a couple of caravans parked up on the verge. I realised a bit late that these were the travelling wood carvers that I had been hunting for a while and failing miserably. Doubling back at the next roundabout I pulled up and looked around the wood carvings on display, dragging Jake (15) with me who used words like "cool" which would normally only be associated with x-box games.

Travelling Wood Carver" width="240" />

I was met by Oscar, who explained he had only just started in the trade, previously carving as a hobby before deciding to do this full time. He said his mate had been carving a lot longer and pointed to the next caravan.

I introduced myself to Ash, explaining I had been looking for him ever since seeing his work on the roundabout in Wareham. "That was my mate" he explained, which seemed to be the theme of the night. He went on to say that there were a number of wood carvers that travelled the country, staying for a few days at each location, long enough to sell a few items to passing drivers, who may return after a number of drive by's, but not long enough to be seen as a nuisance. Ash explained as he smoked his e-cigarette that some people assume the worse, thinking he might break into houses or leave piles of rubbish. It had not even occurred to me to make the connection, what I was seeing was a skilled and talented craftsman sharing his craft with anyone lucky enough to stumble past him. I almost jokingly asked if he had a website and I'm not sure why I assumed he wouldn't, thinking that connectivity may be a problem. Yes he said and I was later to find it is actually very good and gave me a insight to someone who is a master of his art.

The pieces on display were a mixture of sizes and complexity, from the small mushrooms, to collections of owls, bears, rabbits, giraffes and both mine and jakes favorite, the wizard. You can find Ash's website including a few tips on how to start carving and some great shots of Ash's work.
I was more than happy to do this as I haven't actually painted a Westie before so it's always nice to try something new although all the dogs I paint are unique in their own way!
We managed to catch up with owner and Crafter Shirlea to find out a bit more about their work...
It was a simple suggestion from a friend who planted the seed and then stood back and watched the idea grow. At first I started making jewellery with less expensive beads and glass pearls but very soon came to realize that the consistency was not up to the standard that I would expect if I were buying the finished product myself. I therefore sourced Swarovski crystal pearls and Swarovski crystals and now use only these as well as semi-precious gems. Using these finer materials means that there is consistency and quality and that I can colour match almost any piece to match an outfit/wedding theme etc and every piece made is unique (unless for instance a bride requires identical pieces for, say, bridesmaids gifts etc.).

I accompanied Lucy over to Poole this week to deliver Lucy's latest Pet Portrait of Cassie the Lassie, well that's what we called her, she is quite obviously a Collie! Cassie's owners found Lucy at Woofstock a few weeks ago when she set up stall proudly displaying Jed, who obviously caught an eye or two with Lucy picking up four commissions.

Over the preceding days I nagged Lucy to photograph Cassie's progress so we could produce a video of her progress. This proved difficult as Lucy likes to work off the floor rather than on a easel which made photographing the painting in the same place at regular intervals near impossible, but we will try again sometime.

Trudy met us at her door and was visibly excited as Lucy had sent a teaser photograph by e-mail and had wrapped the oil portrait in paper in readiness for an "unveiling". It was at this point I wish I had filmed Trudy's reaction, the photo Lucy sent obviously didn't do the painting justice as I thought she was going to burst into tears (that has happened before!).

Trudy explained as we tried to get Cassie to pose with her likeness that they were preparing a wall especially for the painting which would be a talking point. Cassie was unimpressed and more interested in the treats being placed strategically around her painting to get a good marketing photo.

We bid Trudy farewell and stopped off at a local pub celebrating with a couple of beers courtesy of the extra Trudy had given Lucy in appreciation. I really enjoy helping Lucy sometimes! :-) It was a lovey reaction and we both hope that Trudy enjoys her painting.
Thought I would head over to see Sam's Fudge and find some other yummy local goodies. It was great to see some demonstrations going on too and we were just on time to see Chococo, may have had to buy some Candied Orange in Dark Chocolate just to see if it tasted as good as it looked (it did and it didn't quite make it home!)
Recommended by my sister I decided to get some Buffalo steaks from West Country Water Buffalo (that's dinner sorted tonight!) and also got some delicious smoked salmon from Chesil Smokery to go with my sheep cheese from Wootton Organic Dairy with crackers, yum! Ok so I've eaten all of that too, well fresher the better I suppose!
It was great to see Dark Matters there with their amazing Chocolate Brownies, I decided to be good (well as good as you can be at a Food Fair) and not give in to the Brownies although I'm beginning to regret that decision, good to know they do Postal Orders :)
Loved the wooden reindeer's ;) the hampers were amazing too (I would love one for Christmas, hint hint)
We recently drove past the Allendale Centre in Wimborne and noticed a craft fair was taking place, so of course we had to dive in and take a look. The hall couple only support about 20 stalls but the event was busy and there was a hint of Christmas despite being only October.

Tucked at the back of the hall I noticed a man selling some attractive wooden bowls, some were decorated with images of animals or flowers. I had assumed these were mass produced and had to ask the man behind the stall if he had made these himself. Looking slightly bemused, "of course" he replied. I was a little astonished as I looked on the back of a near perfect small maple bowl, the price was very affordable.

using a electric pen whose heat can be adjusted and creating various shades. Lesley wasn't at the fair, as she was feeling ill, leaving Dave to field the onslaught of questions I had for him. He explained that he had been to a fair the weekend before which had left his stock dwindling and it was at this point I asked him to consider coming to the Steeple Leaze Farm Christmas Fair in November, as the stick he had would be very popular, fitting in perfectly with our country theme. To my suprise Dave knew exactly where we are as he regularly cycles in the area, despite being in his 80's!

Bidding farewell to Dave and his excellent products, I took his telephone number and email address, he had no website and I didn't even ask about Facebook but promised I would follow up on our conversation, which I will and really hope he can come along next month.

We had heard about the unit that houses over 50 arts and crafts stalls as "Crafty Moo" friend and owner of the basket boutique, Nerissa, has a permanent pitch there and proudly advertises the fact on her website. Toad Hall doesn't have a website at the moment, we found them on Facebook.

We found Toad Hall about a mile from Wimborne town center in Stone Lane industrial Estate, with a couple of signs pointing us down a unlikely industrial estate where you would expect to find a number of workshops or one man band garages. Parking wasn't too much of a problem and we quickly found a space behind the unit.

Walking into Toad Hall you are immediately confronted with a Shabby Chic, Retro and vintage theme running through the unit that has clearly seen better days but provides exactly the right atmosphere for the craft people it hosts. If you are looking for the Range, you will be disappointed, which is why we loved it!

We had some disagreement on how many stalls were over the two floors, I said 30 but Lucy thinks 100, we reached a compromise by saying "a lot". There was certainly enough to look around, my particular favourite was 'Made by Harry', who was upstairs and tucked in the corner, displaying a range of minimalist illustrations, drawings and designs.

Lucy picked out Basket Boutique (of course), but also liked Home in Time, who make some great scented wreaths...... very seasonal!. We will certainly be following them up for a future blog.

It was great to be able to browse all the stalls look at the products, we didn't see any of the stall holders as you pay at the front desk for anything you want to buy, this was great for me as it makes the experience unpressured although I think some people would want to talk to the stall holders. But it is a great idea and provides small businesses a forum to sell their wares. Toad Hall is open everyday from 10 - 4pm.

We finished our visit with a quick cup of team and a shared slice of coffee and walnut cake. Not missing the opportunity to make a cheeky sale, Toad Hall offer the opportunity to buy the cups you drink out of! Great idea on every front, well done Toad Hall!
Becca recently gave birth to a gorgeous little boy, Seb. When Becca went off on maternity leave the lovely people at Venator recruitment where Becca is the Office Manager commissioned me to paint a mural in the new nursery. We decided on a bit of a 'down under' theme as Becca's partner is from New Zealand and Becca's favourite animal is a Koala so there was a bit of a mix! In the blog Becca has added photos from the various stages of the nursery mural, with a few terrible pics of me included!

Katy-May designs is a great example of the artistic talent in Dorset, I first saw these brilliant designs at the Dorset County Show back in September and they stood out, the platters and coasters are all unique and have a real hand made, country charm. The success of artists and crafts people like this just go to show how popular handmade, local, handcrafted products are.

No blog about the local produce in Purbeck would be complete without a mention about Rebecca's Kitchen. I'm not sure when I become aware of the brand, it was probably a "like" from a facebook friend as Rebecca posted about her excellent range of preserves and chutneys which she makes at home near Wareham.

Rebecca has certainly hit the nail on the head, combining a excellent product with a great looking brand, which she markets on social media. In my opinion her crowning glory is the excellent Chilli Pepper Jelly, we always have a jar in the fridge which we use on anything from a roast dinner to a condiment at one of our BBQ parties. We recently had to ask her to produce larger jars as the standard large jar would be exhausted within a week.
Knowing how hard artists work and the passion they have for their craft, it's really nice to see a true success story, especially the success of a local artist who's roots started in Dorset and progressed to painting a royal portrait.

I knew Graham from the Purbeck School, I always knew he was good at drawing but I admit his talents fell far from a teenage boys attention more interested in girls and rugby. Graham was largely self taught, relying on natural talent and an eye for color. Straight from school he started with The Walt Disney company and produced art for companies all over the world.
Grahams influences include Claude Monet bringing through the impressionist era through his tool of choice, the palette knife. This style differs from the talented landscape artists of the Purbeck region, choosing instead scenes from Venice and the Mediterranean.

I was lucky enough to watch through social media as Graham set about his royal portrait featuring Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, posting and slowly unveiling the final 35" x 45" masterpiece. This was his first attempt at painting a portrait and the oil on canvas took him 2 months to complete.

Between his various exhibitions and studio work, Graham teaches and shows his work on board Oceania Cruise Ships. You can see Grahams work on his website. http://www.denisonart.com/
I have recently spotted another fantastic photographer, unsurprisingly, living in the Purbeck Isles. Andy Farrer is a local lad living in Swanage having trained in Bournemouth College.

The Purbeck area gives a photographer a wealth of subject matter and it seems Andy just takes every opportunity to scout out those breath taking scenes. His website just bursts at the seams with pictures of the local landmarks in just about every season and light condition you can think of and I could spend hours virtually thumbing through them. My particular favorites are of course the photographs of Corfe Castle in various states of seasonality. As Andy puts it himself:

I can dash to if I spot a promising looking sky out of the window, so it helps stack the odds of some good shots in my favour.

Its not just landscapes however, Andy doesn't seem to be afraid to experiment and post something just a little different. The infrared images caught my eye with Corfe Castle pictured sharply against a frost covered graveyard made me shudder and I'm not sure whether in response to the perceived cold or the stark demonstration of history and death. But not to get to morbid, I really enjoy Andy's lens view of the area and shall watch out for his work in the future.
